The Power of Three Passions

Why You Need a Passion for Provision, a Passion for Joy, and a Passion for Purpose

I once heard a speaker say something that grabbed me so deeply, it never left:

Every person needs three passions
one that makes you money,
one that brings you joy,
and one that gives you purpose.

At the time, I didn’t realize I was already living this.
I didn’t figure it out by reading a book or taking a course…
I stumbled into it by survival, calling, and curiosity.

Looking back, I see how God used these three lanes to develop me, protect me, and give my life direction.

Let me break down what I’ve learned, and how you can apply it to your own journey.

1) A Passion That Makes You Money – Provision

For me, that’s The Customized Ride.

I never expected the world of custom cars and car shows to become part of my life story.
But when my son and I started covering events, something woke up inside us.
One camera… one conversation… one moment at a show…
and suddenly it grew.

It’s brought income, opportunities, relationships, and doors I could have never planned.
Some months are great. Some months are slow.
But it’s a lane with real business potential.

Provision isn’t the purpose —
but it builds stability so purpose has room to breathe.

📖 Scripture

“The Lord will bless the work of your hands.” — Deuteronomy 28:12

Work is not a curse.
It’s a gift.
Provision is part of purpose.

2) A Passion That Brings You Joy – Play

For me, that’s The Chris & Sandy Show.

Our show wasn’t born out of strategy, it was born out of love.
I love hearing people’s stories.
I love conversation.
I love connection.

When the show began, we had no idea what we were doing.
But then big guests said yes.
Their teams loved us.
People opened their hearts to us.

We fell in love with the process.
It made us come alive.

This is your joy lane
the thing you can do for hours and never get tired.

You need this.
Life without joy is just survival.

📖 Scripture

“A joyful heart is good medicine.” — Proverbs 17:22

God created us to delight in things.
Joy heals us.

3) A Passion That Gives You Purpose – Mission

This is the one that scares me the most —
my story, my book, and speaking.

This is the deep one.
The painful one.
The one that costs something.

This passion was formed in:

  • Childhood trauma
  • Addiction
  • Broken identity
  • Healing
  • Marriage redemption
  • Faith
  • Surrender

This isn’t just what I want to do,
it’s what I feel called to do.

It is the passion that keeps me up at night.
The one that pulls on my heart.
The one that whispers,

“This is why you survived.”

It’s the lane that will help people heal.
It’s the lane that gives my pain purpose.

📖 Scripture

“We comfort others with the comfort we ourselves received from God.” — 2 Corinthians 1:4

Purpose is always connected to the pain God brought you through.

Why You Need All Three

Some people try to make ONE thing be everything:

  • Their job is their identity
  • Their hobby becomes their paycheck
  • Their purpose must pay their bills

That’s a heavy load for one lane to carry.

When you put all your weight on one thing,
you risk crushing it —
and yourself.

Why?

Because when:

  • The work slows
  • The fun fades
  • The mission feels unclear

…your whole life feels like it’s falling apart.

But when you have three lanes,
you have balance.

When business is slow,
joy fills your tank.

When joy feels low,
purpose gives meaning.

When purpose feels heavy,
work gives structure.

They feed each other.

That’s balance.
That’s wisdom.

I want to be clear, I’m not saying the “provision” passion is the only one that can make money. All three lanes can produce income. The Customized Ride has brought in money, The Chris & Sandy Show has brought opportunities, and one day my writing and speaking will too.

Purpose doesn’t mean broke, and joy doesn’t mean hobby-only. I’m simply saying the primary role of each passion is different. One mainly sustains you financially, one fills your soul, and one gives your life direction and meaning but they can all overlap and feed each other.

When God is in it, even your purpose can become provision, and your joy can create opportunity. That’s the beauty of it, each lane is allowed to flourish without the pressure of being “everything.”

How This Model Helps Prevent Burnout

Burnout happens when ONE passion carries ALL the emotional and spiritual load.

If your:

  • Income
  • Identity
  • Community
  • Self-worth

…all come from the same place…

You’re not just working,
you’re drowning.

Burnout happens when:

“If this fails, I fail.”

But when you have three streams, you can breathe.

One can rest while another can run.

When The Customized Ride slows…
The Chris & Sandy Show still brings joy.

When the show is quiet…
my writing gives purpose.

When writing feels heavy…
the business keeps us going.

It’s like a three-legged stool.
Take one or two away — it falls.

But with three,
it stands strong.

📖 Scripture

“A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” — Ecclesiastes 4:12

That applies to more than relationships,
it applies to life structure.

Three passions create stability.

How to Find Your Three

This isn’t complicated.
Start by asking:

1) What can make me money?

What skill or passion can provide in a sustainable way?

2) What brings me joy?

What makes you come alive?

3) What gives me purpose?

What breaks your heart?
What makes you feel like you’re helping others?

You don’t have to master all three today.
Just start identifying the lanes God may be leading you into.

And don’t try to force them to be the same thing.
Let them breathe on their own.

Lessons Learned

You don’t have to squeeze your whole life into one passion.
It’s okay to diversify.

Joy is just as necessary as income.
Fun isn’t childish, it’s medicine.

Purpose is the deepest lane — but it often comes last.
God shapes you before He sends you.

Multiple passions create emotional + spiritual balance.
When one falters, another strengthens.

Your passions often come from your story — and God wastes none of it.

Final Thoughts

I never set out to create three passions.
They just formed over time.

Looking back, I see how God used:

  • Work to sustain me
  • Joy to refresh me
  • Purpose to guide me

And together, they’ve kept me from burning out…
from giving up…
from losing heart.

If you feel stuck, lost, or overwhelmed…
maybe it’s because you’ve been trying to make ONE thing do EVERYTHING.

Give yourself permission to spread out.
To breathe.
To explore.

Ask God to show you:

  • Where you can grow
  • Where you can play
  • Where you can serve

And watch how your life finds balance again.

One passion provides.
One passion restores.
One passion transforms.

You need all three.

And if God gave you multiple passions,
it’s because He plans to use them.

All of them.

Living a God-Inspired Life,

Chris
